On November 15th 2007, we met Kill The Young just before their show at the BT59 (Bordeaux, France).__________________________________________
Muzzart: You work with Discograph which is a French label. How did you come to work with them?Dylan (bassist): We'd been playing together in a band for about 6 years and we were playing in a convention called "In The City" in Manchester. One night Pierre Louis who was A&R for Discograph at the time and who is now our manager was there with Jean Louis from the Transmusicales rock festival. They were there to see the bands, they saw us and came to tell us we'd been brilliant, gave us cards and we contacted them one week later.
Tom (singer/ guitarist): And they offered us a record deal!
Dylan: It happened really quick! That was in September 2004. By January 2005, we were recording the first album Kill The Young.
Muzzart: Were you already called Kill The Young?Tom: It was the same line-up because we're brothers but we wanted to change our name, we used to be called Production G. Don't ask why! The label didn't like it and we didn't like it anyway so...
Dylan: We had a song called
"Kill YOUR Young" so we just twisted that title.
Muzzart: Had you toured a lot before the record deal?Dylan: We had played in pubs and bars across England for about 7 years, the North West mainly. Our parents had to drive us. They had to be there because...
Olly (drummer): ...I was only 10!
Dylan: We had guardians, it wasn't really rock'n'roll! It's more rock'n'roll now that the parents are at home! (laughing)
Muzzart: And aren't they calling all the time asking 'What are you doing?' ?Tom: Or 'Are you drunk???' ? (laughing)
Muzzart (laughing): Is that why you're on tour so much??Tom: Yeah, to get away from the parents... but we like being on tour, you get used to being on the road, it's like home, hotels, etc... but living out on a suitcase, it's a fucking nightmare... (laughing)
Muzzart: When and where was your first show?Dylan: Tom had started the band before with other members and then I joined so mine and Olly's first gig was in village hall, like a church hall, in our hometown called Saint Mary's Hall. All our friends came down, we were really young at the time like 15...
Tom: ... and drunk...
Dylan: We were all drunk and stuff...
Muzzart: And your parents were embarrassed, I suppose...Dylan: Embarrassed? They were probably even more misbehaved than we were! (laugning)
Muzzart: Tom, are you the one who writes all the lyrics?Tom (talking about his brothers): Yeah, they give me lines but they're not very good...
Muzzart: What you write is quite violent...Tom: Why do you think it's violent?
Muzzart: When you say 'Boil a baby, sleep with horses' for instance...Tom: I wrote that when we were in the studio, we had been there for two and a half weeks, I got cabin fever, I started going mad. I needed a pub or something nearby to remind me of normal life. It drove me mad and I just wrote down what was in my head.
Dylan: The studio was in the middle of the countryside. There were lots of horses and he kept on going about sleeping with horses! As a joke I told him to put a line about sleeping with horses and he did!
Muzzart: As long as you don't actually do it...Tom: But I haven't ruled that out yet... There are lots of things I want to do once before I die !(laughing)
Dylan: Not horses !!!
Muzzart: Let's talk about your new album Proud Sponsors of Boredom, what did you do differently from the first album?Tom: The first album was made of three minute songs one after the other, pop songs, simple. We wanted to have more thoughts going into it, breakdowns in the music, the lyrics got a little more « violent » some might say... (laughing). We saw this one as a whole, not individual songs, we saw it as a picture.
Dylan: And the next one will be different too, we're constantly changing our sounds to try to keep things fresh.
Muzzart: Less violent, maybe?Tom: I don't know, i'm still not happy about anything...
Muzzart: We saw on the net that you made a cover of 'Girls just wanna have fun', are there other songs you'd like to cover?Dylan: Yeah, we were talking about it during the soundcheck. There's a few more dancy songs that we'd like to play in acoustic versions like
'Where's your Head At' by Basement Jaxx.
Olly: 'Born Slippy' by Underworld from the Trainspotting soundtrack.
Dylan: And maybe a Daft Punk song or something.
Muzzart: What kind of music do you listen to?Dylan: Anything really. My ipod is on 'shuffle' so anything that comes up. Radiohead's new album is very good.
Tom: Queens of the Stone Age.
Olly: And Arctic Monkeys' new album.
Dylan: Olly listens too much to that. When you listen to something over and over again, you need to take a break.
Tom (to Dylan): That's how I feel about you! (laughing)
Dylan: Thanks.
Muzzart: Do you all listen to the same music?Dylan: yeah, we do have quite similar tastes.
Muzzart: We saw on your myspace that you recorded a message to your fans (see the video here), we'd like to know in which conditions you shot that video...Tom: I was really stoned.
Dylan: I wasn't completely sober as well... and it was my idea to get in the bed. We'll do another one in another place I think.
Muzzart: But why are you all naked in the same bed?Tom: Well, you know, nights on tour it gets crazy.
Olly: You get a bit lonely sometimes...
Dylan: And we're not making enough money to get our own bed so we have to share.
Muzzart: Awww...
Muzzart quizz:Muzzart: What is the definition of a good song to you?Tom: One that you like to sing.
Dylan: Melody!
Olly: You've just said my two answers! I'd say the hook, the energy!
Muzzart: What is the best show you've ever seen?Olly: Well, we've never seen ourselves play...
Tom: I saw Green Day a while ago.
Dylan: We haven't been to any gigs lately but I remember Beck on stage at the V festival in England in 1997. That was really good.
Olly: Cake, Jimmy Eat World,...
Dylan: And Incubus as well in 1997 in a small club when they did
S.C.I.E.N.C.E..
Tom: When they were good.
Muzzart: What is the first album you've bought?Dylan: Pearl Jam,
Ten.Tom: The Simpsons sing the blues when I was a kid.
Olly: The Get Up Kids,
Something to write home about.
Muzzart: Do you know any French songs?Olly: Frère Jacques!
Tom: Johnny Hallyday's new album!! (laughing)
Dylan: There's a comedy show from New Zealand called Flight of the Conchords, their French song on that is very funny.
All (singing): Fa la fa fa !! Camembert! Pamplemousse! Jus d'orange! Jacques Cousteau!____________________________________________
